Couch Turf

Santa Ana Couch

  • Traffic tolerance: low to moderate in shadier areas, extremely hard wearing when grown in full sun. The most attractive of the Couch turf types.
  • Drought tolerance: high
  • Sun and shade: tolerates 10 - 30% shade
  • Growth speed: very fast in summer
  • Mowing frequency (Sydney summer): every 7 - 10 days (but only about monthly in winter)
  • Texture: soft
  • Leaf width: fine
  • Colour: light to olive green
  • Seasonal look: fades a bit in winter
  • Comments: A great fine lawn for hot sunny spaces.

Don't choose it for very shady places or it will be thin. Keep it mown short for a great look. Requires more maintenance than other varieties. Repairs itself well.

Windsor Green Couch

  • The most shade tolerant couch on the market. However it is less durable and requires higher maintenance.
  • Traffic tolerance: low
  • Drought tolerance: high
  • Sun and shade: tolerates up to 50% shade.
  • Growth speed: slower than other Couches
  • Mowing frequency (Sydney summer): about every 2 - 3 weeks
  • Texture: soft
  • Leaf width: fine
  • Colour: mid green
  • Seasonal look: stays green all year round
  • Comments: Requires more maintenance than, say, Buffalos.

Wintergreen Couch

  • Traffic tolerance: low to moderate traffic
  • Drought tolerance: high
  • Sun and shade: tolerates 10 - 40% shade
  • Growth speed: slow
  • Mowing frequency (Sydney summer): about every 2 - 3 weeks
  • Texture: soft
  • Leaf width: fine
  • Colour: deep green
  • Seasonal look: stays green all year round
  • Comments: Handles damp areas well. Dense growth. Needs regular feeding. You should leave it a bit long when mowing. It also has excellent salt tolerance and quick recovery from damage.
