Turf Types: Buffalo Turf

The main turf types we install for you are the Buffalos, Couches and Kikuyu. This is because they have the best range of features to suit Sydney environments. Buffalo used to be hard and scratchy, but not any more. There are several soft varieties that are also hard wearing and have different tolerances for shade and drought.

Sir Walter Buffalo

  • One of the easiest care, low maintenance of the turf types.
  • Traffic tolerance: hard wearing, handles medium - high foot traffic
  • Drought tolerance: medium
  • Sun and shade: tolerates 50 - 70% shade, give it 2 - 3 hours of direct sun per day
  • Growth speed: fastest growing of the Buffalos
  • Mowing frequency (Sydney summer): about once per week
  • Texture: soft underfoot
  • Leaf width: broad
  • Colour: dark green
  • Seasonal look: stays green all year round
  • Comments: Very resistant to diseases and weeds, tolerates frost & extreme heat

Palmetto Buffalo

  • A great low maintenance lawn that handles a lot of sun.
  • Traffic tolerance: hard wearing, high traffic tolerance
  • Drought tolerance: high
  • Sun and shade: tolerates up to 50% shade, give it 4 - 5 hours of direct sun per day
  • Growth speed: slow to medium
  • Mowing frequency (Sydney summer): about every 2 weeks
  • Texture: soft
  • Leaf width: broad
  • Colour: dark emerald green
  • Seasonal look: stays green all year round
  • Comments: Looks great because of its slow growth and hard wearing ability. Frost tolerant. Quick recovery after damage. Good for salty areas, eg around salt pools and near the coast. However if you have a shady area to turf, choose another variety.

Velvet Soft Leaf Buffalo

  • Traffic tolerance: the hardest wearing of the Buffalo turf types on the market
  • Drought tolerance: medium
  • Sun and shade: tolerates 50% shade, give it 4 - 5 hours of direct sun per day
  • Growth speed: medium
  • Mowing frequency (Sydney summer): about every week
  • Texture: soft
  • Leaf width: broad
  • Colour: variable
  • Seasonal look: distinct purple tint in winter
  • Comments: Resistant to fungus and disease. If you prefer a green lawn all year round, choose another variety. However if you like purple for a change, go for it! If you are on a tight budget this is an inexpensive lawn. Good for full sun. Does not handle high humidity very well though.

Sapphire Buffalo

  • Traffic tolerance: extremely hard wearing
  • Drought tolerance: medium
  • Sun and shade: tolerates up to 70% shade, give it 2 - 3 hours of direct sun per day
  • Growth speed: slow
  • Mowing frequency (Sydney summer): every 2 - 3 weeks
  • Texture: soft underfoot
  • Leaf width: broad leaf that folds, so looks miniature
  • Colour: deep green with slightly bluish tint
  • Seasonal look: stays green all year round
  • Comments: Deep roots give higher drought tolerance once established. Frost tolerant. Dense mat-like growth makes it good at resisting weeds.

Matilda Buffalo

  • Traffic tolerance: hard wearing, tolerates medium to high traffic
  • Drought tolerance: medium
  • Sun and shade: tolerates up to 70% shade, give it 2 - 3 hours of direct sun per day
  • Growth speed: medium to fast
  • Mowing frequency (Sydney summer): about every 10 days
  • Texture: soft
  • Leaf width: miniature - thinner stem & leaf than other Buffalos
  • Colour: deep green
  • Seasonal look: stays green all year round
  • Comments: Matilda is great, but can suffer from what's called 'thatching' if not very well maintained. Thatching is the buildup of dead shoots, leaves, and bits of living stems. As they mulch it feeds and insulates the lawn, which is great. Furthermore it makes sports lawns nice and springy. It's only a problem when it builds up faster than it breaks down. Possible problems are waterlogging in very rainy weather, excess drying, scalping by lawn mowers, and harbouring pests. Consider your environment and care plan when thinking about this turf.

ST91 Buffalo

  • Hardest wearing of all the shade tolerant grasses.
  • Traffic tolerance: medium
  • Drought tolerance: medium
  • Sun and shade: tolerates up to 91% shade, can survive on 1 hour of direct sun per day
  • Growth speed: slow (but medium in sunny areas)
  • Mowing frequency (Sydney summer): about once every 3 weeks in shady areas
  • Texture: soft
  • Leaf width: miniature
  • Colour: variable
  • Seasonal look: can take on a purple tint in winter
  • Comments: A low maintenance, fungus resistant lawn, great for very shady areas.

ST85 Buffalo

At 85% shade tolerance, this is a good lawn in that respect. However ST91 Buffalo has largely replaced it on the market.
